Prepare Your Home for a Worry-Free Vacation

Jun 25, 2019

When you’re on vacation, the last thing you want to think about is your home. While there’s a lot of things you need to do before leaving, it’s important to take some time to make sure your home is also ready for your departure.  Whether you’re going out of town for the weekend or escaping for several weeks, here’s how to prepare your home before you leave so you can fully enjoy your break.

Give your home a “lived-in” look

Make your home look like someone is still there even if you’re not. Stop delivery on your mail and newspapers while you’re gone so it doesn’t pile up, telltale signs a home is unoccupied. If you’ll only be gone a few days, ask a friend, neighbor, or family member to gather your mail. If your trip is longer, you can place a vacation hold with the post office. You can also ask a neighbor to occasionally park their car in your driveway as well.

Make use of light timers

A great way to deter break-ins is by putting your lights on timers. You can go the use analog outlet timers or invest in smart bulbs. Smart bulbs are great because not only will you be able to control the lights while you’re away, you can also create variable schedule so the lights come on at different times, making it look like someone is actually in the house.

It’s also helpful to install motion-activated outdoor lighting to keep your home visible.

Program your thermostat

Adjust your thermostat so your air conditioning doesn’t kick on while you’re away. If you have a smart thermostat, you can easily set the temperature so your home is comfortable when you get home!

Unplug unneeded electronics/appliances

Unplug any nonessential appliance or electronic device (e.g. television, game consoles, microwaves, etc.) that don’t need to be on while you’re gone. Not only will you save a few dollars on your electric bills, but you’ll also prevent damage to your devices in the event of a power outage happening while you’re away.

Clean your house

One sure-fire way to lose the post-vacation buzz is returning to a messy house. Things may be hectic leading up to your departure, but take some time to clean out the fridge and toss anything that’ll expire while you’re away. Take out the trash, tackle the dishes, laundry and do some spot cleaning in the kitchen and bathroom. Future you will thank you.

Check the windows and doors

Right before you leave, make sure to walk through your home and check that each window and door is locked, especially seldom-used doors and windows.
